🚍 The Bus System at a Glance
Buses are the backbone of public mass transit in Kuwait. The network is extensive, connecting major hubs like Kuwait City, Salmiya, Hawally, and Fahaheel.
Who Runs the Buses?
The buses are run by more than one operator.
⚠️ Important Note: Each operator sells its own tickets and passes, so a CityBus pass won't work on a KPTC bus.

1. Planning Your Route
Bus stops in Kuwait can be basic. Don't rely on finding a map at the bus stop itself!
- Find your route: browse all Kuwait bus routes and bus stops, or use bus stops near me.
- Live buses: the Citylink Kuwait app, by City Group, which runs CityBus, shows CityBus vehicles. Our own Kuwait Bus Route app has the same route lists as this site. See Kuwait bus apps for what each one does.
- Use Google Maps: good for general directions, but check the route with the operator if possible.
2. Paying Without Stress
Kuwait’s bus system is incredibly affordable.
- Cash: The standard way to pay. Pay the driver directly upon boarding.
- Passes and digital payment: each operator sells its own passes; CityBus also offers app payment. See Kuwait bus fares and passes for prices.
- Fares:
- City routes: usually 250 to 350 fils (KD 0.250 to 0.350). KPTC's airport routes cost 250 fils (300 fils on some route 99 trips).
- Airport Express: reported at about 500 fils to KD 1.000.
💡 Pro Tip: Always carry coins! Drivers may not have change for large banknotes (like KD 10 or KD 20), and holding up the queue is stressful. Keep 250 fils and 500 fils coins handy.
3. Bus Etiquette 101
- Women's Seating: By custom, the front seats are often left for women and families. Offer them up if needed.
- Stops: Always wait at a designated shelter. Flagging a bus down mid-street is dangerous and unreliable.

Airport Express Buses (24 hours)
CityBus runs five Airport Express routes, reported at about 500 fils to KD 1.000:
- X1: from Fahaheel, via Mangaf, Mahboula, Fintas and Egailah
- X2: from Salmiya, via Hawalli
- X3: from Bneid Al-Gar, via Sharq and Kuwait City
- X4: from Riqqai, via The Avenues, Farwaniya and Khaitan
- X5: from Jahra, via Sulaibikhat and Farwaniya (see the bus to Jahra guide)
Budget Options (KPTC)
KPTC routes 13, 99 and 501 serve the airport from 4:30 AM to 11:45 PM for 250 fils (300 fils on some route 99 trips).
🚖 Taxis & Ride-Hailing Apps
If the bus stop is too far, Taxis are everywhere.
The Apps (Recommended)
Using an app is safer and establishes a fixed price.
- Careem: The most popular app. Uses licensed taxis but with tracked rides.
- Uber: Operates as "Uber Taxi" in Kuwait.
Street Taxis
- Agree the price first if the meter isn't on. Ask before you get in.
- Fares vary with distance and time of day, so an app gives you a price up front.
📝 4 Rules for Beginners
- Know Your Fils: 1 KD = 1000 Fils. If a driver says "Three Hundred", they mean 300 Fils (KD 0.300).
- Respect the Heat: in summer, temperatures can pass 50°C. Avoid long waits at outdoor stops in the middle of the day and carry water.
