If you are new to the city, the most important thing to know is that Dubai’s bus system is almost exclusively electronic. With one specific exception, no cash is accepted on board regular city buses.
To ride, you need a Nol Card. This unified smart card works across buses, the metro, trams, and water buses. Here is your complete guide to mastering payments, fares, and top-ups in Dubai.

💳 What is a Nol Card?
The Nol Card is a contactless smartcard that stores prepaid funds. It automatically calculates your fare based on the distance you travel. You cannot pay the driver directly or use a standard credit/debit card at the bus reader.
Choosing the Right Card
There are four types of Nol Cards. Choosing the right one depends on how often you travel:
| Card Type | Best For | Cost Per Trip (Silver/Blue) | Key Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver Nol Card | Visitors & Frequent Travelers | AED 3 - 7.50 | Most Popular. Reloadable, works on all transport, daily cap of AED 14. |
| Red Nol Card | Tourists (1-2 trips) | AED 4 - 8.50 | Paper-based single-trip ticket. Limited functionality. |
| Gold Nol Card | Comfort Seekers | AED 6 - 15 | Double the fare price. Grants access to "Gold Class" seats on Metro/Tram. |
| Blue Nol Card | Residents | AED 3 - 7.50 | Personalized with balance protection. Best for students/seniors (50% discount). |
Pro Tip: The Silver Nol Card pays for itself in about 5 trips compared to buying single Red tickets. Plus, the Daily Cap ensures you never pay more than AED 14 in one day, no matter how many trips you take.
🚌 How to Pay on the Bus
Using your card is a simple three-step process.
- Tap In: Enter through the front door and tap your card flat against the reader near the driver. Wait for the beep and green light.
- Ride: The screen will show your starting point and remaining balance.
- Tap Out (Crucial): Exit through the rear door and tap your card again.
Warning: If you forget to tap out, the system assumes you traveled the maximum distance and will charge you the maximum fare (AED 7.50). Always tap out!
💰 Bus Fares and Zones
Dubai is divided into zones. The more zones you cross, the more you pay. If you transfer between a bus and the metro within 30 minutes, it counts as a single journey.
Fare Breakdown
| Zones Traveled | Silver/Blue Card Fare | Gold Card Fare |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Zone (< 3 km) | AED 3.00 | AED 6.00 |
| 2 Zones | AED 5.00 | AED 10.00 |
| 3+ Zones | AED 7.50 | AED 15.00 |

⚠️ Important Exceptions & Rules
Can I ever use cash?
There is only one exception. The inter-city Bus E100 (Dubai to Abu Dhabi) accepts cash payments of AED 25 per journey. For all other city routes, cash is strictly prohibited.
Can I use my Visa/Mastercard directly?
No. Unlike London or New York, you cannot tap your personal bank card directly on the bus reader. However, some banks (like Emirates Islamic) issue RTA Credit Cards with a built-in Nol chip, combining both functions in one plastic card.
Balance Protection
If you are a resident, consider getting a Blue Nol Card. It offers balance protection, meaning if your card is lost or stolen, the RTA can recover your remaining funds.
📝 Summary Checklist for Smooth Payment
- Check Balance: Ensure you have at least AED 3 before boarding.
- Tap Flat: Hold the card steady against the reader.
- Tap Out: Never forget this step to avoid extra charges.
- Auto Top-Up: If you have an RTA Credit Card, enable auto top-up to never run low.
