Nol Card Guide: Dubai Bus and Metro Card Types, Prices and Top-Up

The nol card is the Dubai bus card. Issued by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the same card pays for the Metro, the tram, water buses and RTA buses, including the intercity buses to Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, and some shops accept it too. Dubai's buses don't take cash, so you need a nol card or a paper Red ticket before you board.

Understanding Nol Card Types

There are four main types of Nol Cards. Choosing the right one depends on your stay duration and travel frequency.

1. Silver Nol Card (Best for Tourists & Regular Commuters)

This is the most popular choice. It is economical and offers unlimited access to all transport modes.

• Cost: AED 25 (includes AED 19 travel credit).
• Validity: 5 years.
• Best For: Tourists and frequent visitors.
• The AED 19 of credit covers 2 to 6 trips, depending on how many fare zones each one crosses.

2. Gold Nol Card (Premium Comfort)

Ideally for those who want a more comfortable journey.

• Cost: AED 25 (includes AED 19 travel credit).
• Fares: Double the standard rate (e.g., AED 6 for a single zone instead of AED 3) when using Gold Class cabins.
• Perk: Access to spacious, less crowded Gold Class cabins on Metro and Tram.
• Flexibility: You can still use standard class transport at regular rates if you don't tap the Gold Class readers.

3. Blue Nol Card (Personalized for Residents)

A secure, personalized card with your photo and name.

• Cost: AED 70 (includes AED 20 balance).
• Best For: Residents and long-term expats.
• Security: Balance is recoverable if lost/stolen.
• Discounts: Required for students, seniors, and People of Determination to get 50% off or free travel.

4. Red Nol Ticket (Paper Ticket)

A temporary paper solution.

• Cost: AED 2 base fee + fare.
• Best For: Tourists making only 1-2 journeys.
• Limit: It can hold a limited number of journeys or a day pass, and it expires after about 90 days. It isn't refillable like the Silver card.

Where to Buy Dubai Bus Card

You can find where to buy dubai bus card easily across the city:

1. Metro Stations: Ticket vending machines (cash/card) and staffed counters.
2. Bus Stations: some main bus stations have ticket machines or offices.
3. Retail Outlets: selected shops sell or top up nol cards; check the RTA website for current outlets.
4. Online: Via the RTA Website, Nol Pay App, or S'hail App.
5. Dubai Airport: Ticket offices are available immediately upon arrival.

Dubai Bus Card Price & Fares

Can I use nol card in dubai bus? Yes, it is the only way to pay. Fares are calculated based on the number of zones you cross.

Standard Fares (Silver/Blue Card)

For frequent travelers, passes offer great value:

• 1 Zone: AED 140
• 2 Zones: AED 230
• All Zones: AED 350

Students, Senior Emiratis/Citizens and Social Affairs cardholders get 50% off with a registered Personal card. People of Determination and children aged 5 and under travel free.

Registered vs. Anonymous Cards

How to Register: Visit a metro station or the RTA website. You will receive an SMS with a PIN. You must activate the registration by using the card at a metro gate or Nol Pay app within 4 hours.

Using Nol Card for Shopping (Nol Plus)

Your Nol Card is also a payment card accepted at over 5,000 locations in Dubai.

• Retailers: Zoom, Carrefour, Lulu, Waitrose, Daiso.
• Food: McDonald's, Subway, Costa Coffee, Burger King.
• Services: Fuel stations (ENOC/EPPCO), parking meters, RTA taxis.

Nol Plus Loyalty Program: Link your card to an RTA account to earn points on transport and retail spend. Points can be redeemed for card top-ups or discount vouchers.

Rules for Children & Students

• Aged 5 and under: travel free with an adult.
• Travelling alone: RTA has age rules for children travelling without an adult. Check RTA's current rules before letting a child travel alone.

Student Cards: Students can get a 50% discount on a registered Personal (Blue) card. You'll need an Emirates ID and proof of enrolment; check RTA for the age limits and documents.

Can I use my nol card in Sharjah or Abu Dhabi?

Only on Dubai's own buses. A nol card works on the RTA intercity buses that run between Dubai and the other emirates, because they're Dubai buses: the E303, E306, E307 and other E routes to Sharjah's Al Jubail Bus Station (Property Finder), and the E100, E101 and E102 to Abu Dhabi.

It doesn't work on Sharjah's city buses, which take the Sayer card or cash, or on Abu Dhabi's city buses, which take the Hafilat card. If you travel between emirates often, you'll need both cards. See the Sharjah to Dubai and Abu Dhabi to Dubai bus guides.

Troubleshooting & Limits

• Minimum Balance: keep enough credit for the longest trip you might take; the gates can refuse a card with too little.
• Tap In/Out: Always tap out to avoid being charged the maximum fare.
• Top-Up Activation: after an online top-up, tap your card at a station machine or gate, or use the Nol Pay app, to load the new balance onto the card.
• Card Errors: If the reader shows a red light, check your balance or ensure you are holding the card flat and steady.
