Riyadh to Makkah and Madinah: Bus and Train Options for Umrah

Riyadh is about a day's drive from Makkah, and there's no direct train. Most pilgrims from Riyadh go by intercity bus, flight, or a combination with the Haramain High Speed Railway.

By bus

SAPTCO (Saudi Public Transport Company) runs intercity buses from Riyadh to Makkah, Jeddah and Madinah, with standard and VIP classes. The journey to Makkah takes most of a day. Book on SAPTCO's website or app, and book early for Ramadan and Hajj.

By air and train

1. Fly from Riyadh to Jeddah or Madinah.
2. Take the Haramain High Speed Railway (sar.hhr.sa) between Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah. It is the quickest way between the holy cities.

Before you go

• Permits: Umrah needs a permit booked on the official Nusuk platform, and Hajj has its own permit rules. Check them before booking transport.
• Documents: carry your passport or Iqama and your permit.
• Luggage: check the operator's allowance, especially if you're bringing Zamzam water back.
• Ihram: know where your bus or flight passes the Miqat, so you can enter Ihram in time.
