Kuwait Bus Routes to Salmiya: The Complete Commuter's Guide

Planning a trip to Salmiya? Discover the best bus routes from the Airport, Kuwait City, and The Avenues. Timings, stops, and fares explained.

By Rifat Hossain

Salmiya is the heartbeat of Kuwait's coastal life. It is a primary residential district, a business hub, and the go-to spot for shopping and dining. However, finding parking in Salmiya—especially on weekends—can be a nightmare.

For commuters and visitors looking to navigate this bustling area without the stress of driving, the public transport network offers excellent connectivity. Operated primarily by KPTC and Citybus, the network links Salmiya to the airport, the financial district, and major malls.

Here is your essential guide to getting in and out of Salmiya by bus.

Airport Connections ✈️

If you have just landed at Kuwait International Airport (KIA) and need to reach your hotel or apartment in Salmiya, skip the expensive taxi queue. See our complete Airport Bus Guide for all airport routes.

Bus X2 (Airport Express) This is the dedicated 24-hour service operated by Citybus. It is designed specifically for travellers with luggage.

  • Fare: KD 1 (Payable on board).
  • Schedule: Runs 24 hours a day.
  • Onboard Perks: These buses are equipped with Wi-Fi, USB charging points, and a designated luggage area—a lifesaver after a long flight.
  • Key Stops: Before hitting the airport highway, it covers major Salmiya landmarks including:
    • Salmiya Club (Sports Club)
    • GAD Restaurant (Coastal Road)
    • Al Khansa Street
    • Apollo Hospital
    • 4th Ring Road

Connections to Kuwait City (Sharq/Maliya)

To Fahaheel & The Coast 🌊

  • Bus 999: This is a vital long-distance route connecting Maliya to Fahaheel. It stops right in the heart of Salmiya.
    • Key Stops: Salmiya Co-Op, Holiday Inn, and the Scientific Centre area.

To Farwaniya, Jleeb & Khaitan

  • Bus 66 & Bus 66X: Connects Salmiya to Hassawi (Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh).
    • Why take it? It passes through the popular Friday Market and Farwaniya.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Operating Hours: Standard urban buses generally run from 04:20 AM to 10:25 PM. If you are travelling late at night, you must rely on the X-series express buses (like the X2), which run 24/7.
  • Avoid the Heat: Kuwait's summer heat is unforgiving. Do not stand at the bus stop guessing when the bus will arrive. Use the CityBus Kuwait app to track your bus in real-time and head to the stop only when it's approaching.
  • Payment:
    • Cash: Drivers accept coins (carry exact change if possible).
    • Digital: The CityBus Kuwait app allows you to buy e-tickets. You simply validate your ride by scanning a QR code upon boarding—no need to fumble for coins.
